WELCOME TO MY WEBSITE
This site was originally set-up in 2011 when for some reason - I decided to bike from Scarborough, Western Australia, home to Scarborough in Queensland - a journey of 4,565 kms. Little did I know then where this long distance cycling "bug" would take me,
and I have subsequently tried to do one long ride a year.
The idea behind the website was to make a permanent record of my travels and the trials and tribulations that I experienced - hopefully something that might help fellow cyclists contemplating similar trips.
I have facebook pages for each journey too - these I try to post to on a daily basis as I go, but sometimes this is not possible due to lack of internet coverage.
This website is often updated later than the facebook page, and contains more in-depth detail.
My original "www.brendanoonan-onmybike.com" site however became rather large with many pages for each trip, so for the last two rides I have started separate websites. They can all be accessed through the links below.
I have tried to make it as simple as possible - but everybody's mind thinks differently and what is logical to me may not be to others.
Anyway - feel free to look around - and make contact if you have any queries.
FUND-RAISING FOR CHARITY
For each journey I have chosen a charity or charities close to my heart to raise funds for.
It has enabled me to get a greater insight into the workings of various organisations, and I try to go for those that do not have very high overheads with a small amount of the funds raised going to actually do something!
There are 4 main ways I use:
1. - I "sell" pages of my journey to businesses in return for a good size donation to the charity
2. - I "pester" family and friends prior and during such rides
3. - I speak about the trips to various organisations in return for a donation to the charity
4. - We collect various donations along the road for our charity.
I either have an on-line fund-raising page or have encouraged direct banking to such charities so they get maximum use of each dollar donated. As such it is hard to put an actual figure on the amount raised but as at the start of 2019, I estimate the total amount to be over $120,000-00. I am sure we have also helped raised considerable awareness for the charities and the wonderful work they do.
