All funds raised during my ride across Australia went to either the Australian or New Zealand Heart Foundation depending on the donor’s wish. It was a thrill to be named Best Individual Fund-raiser for 2011 by the Queensland Branch of the Australian Heart Foundation. Special thanks to EVERYONE who supported my ride.
I am using my efforts and energy with this ride to raise funds for the Heart Foundation - a truly worthwhile cause. I am sure every family has been affected at sometime by cardiovascular disease (CVD) the term used for heart, stroke or blood vessel disease. Sadly it is the leading cause of death in Australia.
My father suffered a stroke a few years ago, and the effects on his health are still evident to-day I start this ride on 31st March 2011 - the day he turns 88!!
In many cases CVD is something that we can do something about. Apart from the extremely valuable research the Foundation does, I applaud the "educational" role they undertake to make us aware of ways that we can help ourselves.
Their websites are well worth visiting - apart from all the "medical" knowledge on cardiovascular disease, I particularly enjoy the "Healthy Living" pages.
Loads of advice on good eating habits, and great information on physical activity. The Heart Foundation Walking Groups are spread throughout the country, and the "Heartmoves" initiative is another programme well worth becoming involved in.
They have specifically designed programmes for everybody - there really is no excuse - there should be no reason to say "I can't do that"
I can't explain how motivating I found the support I was given when I ran the Auckland Marathon in 2008 as a "Heart Racer". It felt really good to be doing something to help others.
This time, as an "AustraKiwi" (thanks Lilli), I have set up a fund-raising page in each country.

Go visit the Heart Foundations website, there is an incredible amount of information.

Read both sites - we should all learn from this good information that is available.
